The Disconnect
We all know technology has taken over our lives! What can WE do about it? Disconnecting from technology can be a refreshing and necessary step to promote mental well-being, focus, and genuine connections with those around you! The Cleveland Clinic highlights important aspects of the Digital Detox…make sure to take a look!
- Set Boundaries:
Establish specific timeframes for technology use, both daily and weekly. Designate “tech-free” zones in your home, such as the dining table or bedroom.
- Create Tech-Free Time:
Designate specific periods during the day when you’ll be intentionally tech-free. This could include the first hour after waking up or the last hour before bedtime.
- Turn Off Notifications:
Disable non-essential notifications on your devices. This reduces the constant urge to check your phone and allows you to engage with technology on your terms.
- Establish Screen-Free Rituals:
Develop daily rituals that don’t involve screens, such as reading a physical book, enjoying a cup of tea, or taking a leisurely walk.
- Use Apps to Monitor Usage:
Several apps are designed to help you monitor and limit your screen time. Set daily or weekly limits to receive reminders when you approach your designated threshold.
- Create Tech-Free Activities:
Identify activities that don’t involve technology and make them a regular part of your routine. This could include hobbies, outdoor activities, or spending quality time with loved ones.
- Digital Detox Challenges:
Participate in digital detox challenges, where you commit to reducing or eliminating your technology use for a set period. Use this time to explore alternative activities.
- Engage in Physical Activities:
Incorporate physical activities into your routine, such as exercise, yoga, or meditation. These activities not only promote well-being but also provide a break from screens.
- Set Auto-Responses:
Inform friends and colleagues about your designated tech-free times or days. Set auto-responses on emails or messages to manage expectations.
- Quality Social Time:
Prioritize face-to-face interactions with friends and family. Plan activities that foster connection and communication and encourage everyone to keep their devices away during these moments.
Remember, the goal is not complete elimination but finding a healthy balance that works for you. Gradually incorporating these practices with Health can help you enjoy the benefits of a digital detox while maintaining a healthy relationship with technology.
The Reconnection
The key is to be present and engaged with the person in front of you. Adventist Health talks about the benefits created by unplugging. By intentionally creating opportunities for shared experiences and open communication, you can strengthen your relationships without relying on technology. Here are some ideas for your next get-together!
For Friendships:

Organize a small get-together or a potluck dinner at your place. Create an environment conducive to open conversation and genuine connection.
