2023 Award Winners

Honoring Margaret Serna

Executive Director of Elementary Education
Scottsdale Unified School District

Ms. Serna received the 2023 Kindness Star Award for Excellence in Education for her positive attitude and her tireless energy encouraging students to work hard and succeed.

Margaret Serna is the current Executive Director of Elementary Education for the Scottsdale Unified School District. She has eighteen years of teaching experience, twenty-three years as a principal, and seven years as a district leader. Margaret specializes in educating the whole child and believes elementary school children’s successful, well-rounded futures are always driven by kindness, inclusion, and empathy.

Honoring Ruby James

Superintendent
Eloy Elementary School District

Ms. James received the 2023 Kindness Star Award for Excellence in Education for being a true advocate for children and lifelong learning.

Ms. Ruby James is the Superintendent of Eloy Elementary School District in Eloy, Arizona. She has been in education for over 38 years. Ms. James is the first female and first African-American Superintendent to lead Eloy Elementary. Ms. James graduated from Santa Cruz Valley Union High School in 1980. Ms. James is a true reflection of her parents Robert and Celestine James when it comes to her work ethic. Education and hard work was valued in her family. Her motto is “Her pride is inside of every student educated at Eloy Elementary.”
