“Happiness looks good on you!” – Dr. Kojo Sarfo, DNP

We all deserve to feel happiness and to live a happier, more fulfilled life – no matter what that looks like to you. Small changes in your daily, weekly, or monthly habits can have a lasting impact on your overall satisfaction in your life. Let’s learn about some happy habits that we can start implementing today!

One step at a time…

Daily habits have an impact on your mood and mental health. As you practice these habits, take note of what works for you and what doesn’t – these are not one-size-fits-all! Do what works for you and makes you happier overall. Here are some suggestions!

  • Smile! Did you know that smiling is good for you? Smiling releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that our brain releases when we feel pleasure, and also helps our ability to think and plan. Try starting your morning by giving yourself a genuine smile in the mirror!
  • Be kind! Show your appreciation to those around you by giving someone an honest compliment. Not only will you make them smile, but it can also make you feel good. For tips on giving a respectful compliment, click here!
  • Acknowledge the cloud. We’ve all heard the saying, “fake it till you make it.” But what if, when you’re feeling unhappy, instead of faking like everything is fine, you took a moment to sit with it? Acknowledge the moment, then shift your focus on what you need to bounce back.

Weekly Reflection

Taking some time every week for yourself is not selfish. I repeat: taking time for yourself once a week is not selfish. When you take some time to do something for yourself, you reap the benefits you can pass on to those around you!

  • Declutter. Decluttering doesn’t have to be a major project that takes an entire day. Taking 20 minutes once a week can have a huge impact! Once a week, assign one room or space in your home to focus your attention on.
  • Get organized. If you feel all over the place, take some time to plan out the following week at the beginning or end of the week. Even if you don’t complete all the tasks, writing everything out can help ease your mind’s worries!
  • Focus on YOU. Consider putting your phone away and unplugging for at least an hour. Go for a walk in nature, read that book on your “To Be Read” list, meditate, reconnect with a friend, and so much more!

Pay it Forward!

As previously mentioned, when you take the time to take care of yourself, you can then pay it forward to those around you to share the love! There are plenty of ways that you can pay it forward, let’s learn more!

  • Volunteering. Making time in your schedule to volunteer is a great way to feel happier and have an improved sense of satisfaction in your life! Not only do you connect with other volunteers, but it can also increase self-confidence and advance your career. Plus, it looks great to schools if you or someone you know is applying to colleges! Click here to find where you can volunteer near you today!
  • Donate! Monetary donations or resources donations are a great way to pay it forward! If you have the means, you can set up a monthly donation towards a charity or organization that means a lot to you. You can even donate once a month to a different charity or organization. Every bit helps! If you’re not able to donate money, you can donate clothes or food to a local shelter!

Invest in Kindness Today!

At The Be Kind People Project, every donation makes a big difference. We prioritize youth development and work with schools to support students’ social and emotional learning, academic achievement, and overall wellness. A donation to The Be Kind People Project is an investment in a generation of respectful, responsible, and caring citizens and leaders. Here are three ways you can help!
